The Department of Nursing is located in Stroup Hall on the Fort Hays State University campus.

How do I get started? (back to academic questions)
The first thing that you should do is apply for admission to FHSU. Upon acceptance you should contact the Department of Nursing (785.628.4256) to be assigned to an advisor. That advisor will help you enroll in courses.


How do I get started at the beginning of the semester after I am enrolled?

You should access Blackboard on the first day of semester and read your course syllabus. Classroom Support.


Is the degree completely on-line?

Yes, you can complete your RN to BSN and MSN (Nurse Administration and Nurse Education) degrees on-line.


Will my credits from other institutions transfer to FHSU?

These decisions are made on a case by case basis. When you apply for admission, you will send your transcripts from the other institutions you’ve attended to FHSU. You may contact the Registrar’s office (785.628.4222) to inquire about a specific course.


How long does it take to complete the degrees? (back to academic questions)
For undergraduate students to complete the RN to BSN degree, it takes a full time student one year to finish after completing general education requirements. A full time graduate student will take two years to finish while a part time graduate student will take 3-6 years to finish the degree.


How are the courses delivered? (back to academic questions)
The course delivery differs for each course; however, Blackboard is the course management systems you will use for most courses. Additional material will be provided via the Internet, books, CD-Rom, and other materials.

Although the method of communication may differ in each course, you will primarily use e-mail, telephone, on-line discussions, and chat rooms to interact with students and faculty members.


What are advantages to on-line courses?

One of the main advantages of on-line courses is convenience. You can access the course materials at times and places most convenient to you.


Where can I find a list of degrees offered and what classes are involved in them? (back to academic questions)
Information on majors in the nursing discipline and the required hours can be found on the on the departments degree requirement page.


What computer skills will I need to take these courses? (back to academic questions)
You will need basic skills such as keyboarding and accessing the Internet. In addition, you will need to learn how to use the Blackboard Learning System. If don't understand this and want to learn, please see the tutorial section.


How many credit hours can I take at one time?

To be considered a full-time undergraduate student, you have to be enrolled in 12 credit hours during the semester and 9 credit hours for a graduate student. A part-time undergraduate student is enrolled in less than 12 credit hours and less than 9 credit hours for a graduate student. Like any college course load, you must consider the amount of time you can devote to your class or classes based on your obligations such as family, career, etc.


How many students are typically in an on-line Nursing course?

Courses typically have 20-30 students enrolled each semester.

For a general syllabus you may visit www.fhsu.edu/syllabus. For your semester syllabus with due dates and up to date information, you will access it on Blackboard under the Course Information button the first day of the semester.

What are the computer hardware and software requirements to complete my degree? (back to student support service questions)
You will need a computer that can access the Internet with a working CD-ROM that can run the required software programs.

Where do I order my books? (back to student support service questions)
All textbooks and materials for your on-line courses at FHSU may be purchased through the University Bookstore. You may order them via the Internet (www.fhsu.bkstore.com), via phone (877.387.7448) or on campus during store hours. Books will be shipped to the site of your choice.

Are library resources available to FHSU students? (back to student support service questions)
Yes. You may access Forsyth Library at (www.fhsu.edu/forsyth_lib/).

Where do I find a list of courses offered across campus? (back to student support service questions)
Courses listed by semester can be found on TigerTracks.

What support services does the Department of Nursing offer? (back to student support service questions)
The department believes in serving students. The e-Quality Service Matters.net support staff was created to field technology and course delivery related questions for your nursing courses. Course content questions will still be answered by the faculty member teaching your course.

How do I contact the faculty member teaching my course? (back to student support service questions)
Faculty members in the Nursing department list their contact information in the course syllabus, as well as on this website.

How do I add or withdraw from an on-line course at FHSU? (back to student support service questions)
You must consult with your advisor before you are allowed to add or drop a class from your schedule. Visit this website for more assistance on the process of adding or dropping a class.

FHSU nursing students may officially enroll in most nursing courses in 7-10 business days. The last day of enrollment is variable depending on the course.

All open, full-semester classes (16 weeks) offered through the Virtual College will officially close 14 calendar days after the start of each semester.
